Bishop Tartaglia responds to Erskine job losses.

Reacting to the news that more than 800 jobs are being lost at Hewlett Packard in Erskine, Renfrewshire, Bishop Philip Tartaglia the Bishop of Paisley in whose diocese the plant is located, said:

“I am extremely sorry to hear of the loss of so many jobs at Hewlett Packard. I wish to express the Church’s solidarity with the workers who have been made redundant in such uncertain and difficult times for the economy. I hope that neither they nor their families will suffer hardship. I have spoken with the priests at St. Bernadette’s and St. John Bosco’s parishes and asked them to do all they can to assist and support those affected by this terrible blow."

Bishop Tartaglia added;

"I urge the employer to treat the workers justly and generously, and would encourage the Scottish and Westminster Governments to protect and assist the employees in every way possible.”
