Following recent medical advice, Cardinal Keith O'Brien attended Edinburgh Royal Infirmary today (Wednesday 26 March 2008) where he was fitted with a pacemaker. This was an elective admission timed to coincide with a short holiday break. The procedure was carried out under local anaesthetic and did not involve heart surgery.
 
Cardinal O'Brien will resume a full programme of engagements in the coming weeks.
